Find answers to common inquiries regarding our lodge, membership, and the enduring traditions of Freemasonry.

General Questions About Freemasonry

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest fraternal organisations. It is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values, bringing its members together by shared ideals of integrity, charity, and brotherly love. Freemasonry is not a religion, political party, or secret society — it is an organisation that encourages its members to practise their own faith, contribute to their communities, and develop as individuals.

No. Freemasonry is not a religion and does not function as one. It has no creed, no sacraments, and no theological doctrine. Members are expected to believe in a Supreme Being — but Freemasonry itself does not define who or what that is. Men of many different faiths are members of lodges around the world.

No. Freemasonry is a public-facing organisation. The existence of lodges, their members, their meeting locations, and their charitable work are all publicly known. Some elements of lodge ceremony are kept private among initiated members — this is true of many organisations — but Freemasonry itself is openly acknowledged and transparent about its existence and purpose.

Membership & Eligibility

In BC, any man who is of legal adult age, is of good moral character, and believes in a Supreme Being may apply for membership in a lodge. Applicants must apply of their own free will — no one can be pressured or coerced into joining. The lodge will conduct an interview and review process before admission.

Traditionally, Freemasonry asks that a man express interest of his own accord — the phrase “to become a Mason, ask a Mason” reflects this. You do not need a personal invitation. If you are interested, you are welcome to contact Pacific Lodge No. 16 directly or attend one of our open events.

The time commitment varies by member and by lodge. Regular lodge meetings are typically held bi-weekly or monthly. Additional time may be spent on degree work, committee involvement, community events, and social activities. Most members find a level of involvement that fits their personal and professional lives.

Lodge dues and initiation fees vary by lodge. Pacific Lodge No. 16 can provide current information on fees when you make contact. Freemasonry is intended to be accessible to men of different means, and fees are typically modest.
