What Is a Mason?

A Mason is a member of the fraternal organisation known as Freemasonry, which emphasises personal growth, moral development, and service to the community. Being a Mason is about building character, friendship, and understanding while contributing positively to society.

At Pacific Lodge No. 16, Masons come together to uphold long-standing traditions, values, and charitable practices while welcoming new members interested in fellowship and learning.

Core Values

The Core Values of Freemasonry

Freemasonry is built on a set of values that guide how members conduct themselves — in the lodge, in their families, and in their communities.

Integrity & Ethics

Masons are expected to act with honesty and fairness in all aspects of life. The commitment to truth is central to Masonic teaching.

Brotherhood

Freemasonry creates bonds of mutual care and respect among members. All Masons, regardless of background, are united as equals within the lodge.

Education & Growth

Continuous learning is at the heart of Masonic life. Members are encouraged to deepen their understanding of Masonic principles, history, and their own values.

Charity & Community

Masons are committed to supporting their communities through charitable work, volunteering, and giving. Service to others is a defining expression of Masonic membership.

Did You Know? Freemasons are not a religion, but they encourage members to follow their own faith while adhering to Masonic values. Belief in a Supreme Being is a requirement, but Freemasonry is not itself a religious organisation.

Daily Life

What Masons Do

Lodge Meetings

Members meet regularly to conduct lodge business, share Masonic education, and enjoy fellowship. Meetings follow a structured format rooted in long-standing Masonic tradition.

Rituals and Ceremonies

Masonic degree ceremonies use allegory and symbolism to convey moral lessons. These ceremonies are private, but their purpose — encouraging self-improvement — is openly shared.

Educational Programmes

Members participate in discussions and workshops exploring Masonic history, philosophy, ethics, and leadership — supporting lifelong learning within the lodge.

Quick Fact: Pacific Lodge No. 16 members meet regularly to grow as individuals and make a positive impact in Abbotsford and Maple Ridge. It is both a personal journey and a collective effort.

Common Misconceptions About Masons

Common Question

Are Freemasons a secret society?

No. Freemasonry is a public organisation. Our membership, meeting locations, and charitable work are openly known. Some ceremonial details are kept private among members, as is true of many organisations — but Freemasonry itself is not a secret society.

Common Question

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. It does not have sacraments, clergy, or theological doctrine. Men of all faiths are welcome and members are encouraged to practise their own religion.

Common Question

Can anyone join?

Men of good moral character who believe in a Supreme Being and are of legal adult age may apply. Membership is by petition — you choose to apply. You do not need a personal connection, though asking a Mason is always a good starting point.
